The Shala – A Beautiful, Urban, Contemporary Yoga Sanctuary

The Shala is a creative and sacred space for people to explore the practice of yoga in Cape Town with the support of inspiring teachers.

We serve to create an individual experience for each student and have classes for all levels of yoga experience. With continuing education as a focus, The Shala offers Beginners ClassesAdvanced PracticesWorkshopsCourses and certified Yoga Teacher Trainings.

The studio and café are housed in a gorgeous Heritage building on Dunkley Square, where every detail has been created with intention. It offers changing rooms, shower facilities, a plant based soul food cafe, and a gorgeous yoga studio with restored wooden floors and eco-friendly paint.

The interior is designed to provide a connection to the environment and to the individual. The walls are decorated with local artists, and vibrant, energetic colours.


Yoga

A path of union with mind, body and soul energies. All of our drop in classes are multi level, unless otherwise noted, assuming that you have a regular practice and awareness of your body.

Beginners Yoga

Our Beginners classes offer a safe space for those new to yoga, those returning to their practice after some time away or those who simply wish to be reminded of the core aspects of all physical practice – the connection between breath and movement. The pace is slow and deliberate.

Vinyasa yoga

Simply described is movement lead by the breath, a fluid style built from Surya Namaskar. Vinyasa yoga is a moving meditation which develops mental focus, detoxifies and aligns the body, while building strength, stamina and flexibility. Each teacher offers their own unique interpretation and expression.

All levels Vinyasa Yoga

All Levels Vinyasa classes are simple, strong, and fluid. Perfect for all abilities to enjoy opening the body, stilling the mind and moving into center.

Master Class

A level 2 90 minute class for intermediate and advancing students. The sequencing is more complex, including lifts, inversions and full backbends. A basic understanding of Vinyasa yoga, breath, body alignment, and a playful curiosity required.

Props & Swings

Focus on refined alignment and therapeutic integration through the usage of props and aerial swings.

Classes are a combination of grounding, centering floor-work and using the swings to strengthen, stretch, invert and relax.

Some previous yoga experience is essential and a moderate amount of core and upper body strength is helpful. Modifications are offered for different levels of strength and flexibility.

Yin Yoga

Yin classes combine yoga poses and relaxation. Most poses are seated or lying down so the body is supported and given time to surrender with gravity. This allowance offers release and relaxation that nourishes and restores our Being. The focus is on joints, connective tissue, bones and the subtle body, these systems are given time as our awareness shifts from a doing to a Being state. Yin is a wonderful supplement to a Vinyasa practice and a counter/reset to our driven, busy lives. All Levels Welcome.

Yin Vinyasa Yoga

A slow Vinyasa flow moving into Yin postures. Simple fluid movement is offered after the longer Yin holds to fully ripple out and release any tension revealed. All levels will enjoy this deep satisfying practice. The Sunday 6.00 pm class is in alliance with the Cape Town Seva Yoga Project. All proceeds go to the Earthchild Project. Ashtanga Yoga

The toning & the cleansing of the body, the mind & the senses. Each week will focus on building a strong foundation for your vinyasa practice by exploring the roots of vinyasa through the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga. In each class you will be guided through the practice of threading breath with movement & allowing your practice to become a beautiful moving meditation, as well as a workshop on a particular posture or technique to help deepen your practice.

Forrest Yoga

A style of yoga created by Ana Forrest. A strong deep intentional practice for all levels. Forrest yoga focuses on four pillars, Strength, Breath, Integrity, Spirit.

Pre and post natal Yoga

Pre and post natal Yoga provides a relaxed and nurturing atmosphere where you can enhance the bonding process with your baby while supporting the development and strengthening of your body, mind, and spirit during pregnancy.
