Yoga Asana / Postures
Asana is traditionally defined as a “comfortable seat” . Yet it takes time and practice to strengthen and open the body to be able to experience comfort in challenging poses.
We consider Asana practice to be important as it helps to keep the physical body healthy. Tone the vital organs, strengthen weak areas, mobilize the spine and helps to keep the body pain free and supple. Practicing asanas has a positive effect on the emotional body, creating internal space and reflection and helping to alleviate anxiety. A daily asana practice also increases discipline and concentration, and can ready the mind for meditation.
The Shala offers a variety of different classes. Variations for the levelling of postures through yoga props, hands on assist and verbal ques is a key focus of all our teachers.
Our Beginners classes offer a safe space for those new to yoga, those returning to their practice after some time away or those who simply wish to be reminded of the core aspects of all physical practice – the connection between breath and movement. The pace is slow and deliberate.
Simply described is movement lead by the breath, a fluid style built from Surya Namaskar. Vinyasa yoga is a moving meditation which develops mental focus, detoxifies and aligns the body, while building strength, stamina and flexibility. Each teacher offers their own unique interpretation and expression.
All levels Vinyasa Yoga
All Levels Vinyasa classes are simple, strong, and fluid. Perfect for all abilities to enjoy opening the body, stilling the mind and moving into center.
A level 2, 90 minute class for intermediate and advancing students. The sequencing is more complex, including lifts, inversions and full backbends. A basic understanding of Vinyasa yoga, breath, body alignment, and a playful curiosity required.
Suspension Yoga – Classes on hold until further notice
The suspension yoga is a fantastic way to build strength and agility. Students work with a suspended ‘hammock ‘ from the rafters and get guided through a range of movements from pulling the whole body upwards to hanging upside down in the hammock for an easy inversion. We have limited hammocks so these classes are on a separate class package and require students to book for them.
Yin classes combine yoga poses and relaxation. Most poses are seated or lying down so the body is supported and given time to surrender with gravity. This allowance offers release and relaxation that nourishes and restores our Being. The focus is on joints, connective tissue, bones and the subtle body, these systems are given time as our awareness shifts from a doing to a Being state. Yin is a wonderful supplement to a Vinyasa practice and a counter/reset to our driven, busy lives. All Levels Welcome.
Yin Vinyasa Yoga
A slow Vinyasa flow moving into Yin postures. Simple fluid movement is offered after the longer Yin holds to fully ripple out and release any tension revealed. All levels will enjoy this deep satisfying practice. The Sunday 6.00 pm class is in alliance with the Cape Town Seva Yoga Project. All proceeds go to the Earthchild Project. Additional donations welcome. www.earthchildproject.org
Restorative yoga is a form of yoga that seeks to achieve physical, mental and emotional relaxation with the aid of props. The use of props makes it easier for you to maintain balance while you are stimulating and relaxing your body.

Pre and post natal Yoga
Pre and post natal Yoga provides a relaxed and nurturing atmosphere where you can enhance the bonding process with your baby while supporting the development and strengthening of your body, mind, and spirit during pregnancy.
Our regular Kirtan sessions are led by Nokuphiwo (Noks) Jada. She is a founder member of The Earthchild Project, an accredited Yoga Teacher and a talented musician.
Kirtan is meditation through melodic chanting. The sessions run like a call-and-response sing-along where the leader (Noks) teaches the group simple Sanskrit or English chants that build slowly. You do not have to have a good voice to sing as Noks holds the space with her incredibly talented voice. Singing is the heart of Kirtan, and no one cares what you sound like! All the voices merge and become one voice that aids the upliftment of the heart and the quieting of the mind.
Kirtan began in India centuries ago as a spiritual practice, and was known as the laypersons way to connect with the Divine. Kirtan is non-denominational, the Universal language of Spirit, the song of the Soul.
You really have to experience Kirtan to fully understand the direct and tangible results it can have on your body. You are welcome to bring instruments, friends and family.
Regular class drop-in rates or packages can be used for these sessions.
Please arrive 30-mins early if you would like to bring and play a musical instrument so that you can get the basic cords from Noks before we begin the practice.
